How Reconditioned Or Rewound Transformers Are A Good Solution For Industrials | Part 2

July 31, 2014

In Part 1 of this two-part series on the value of investing in reconditioned and rewound transformers we discussed how waiting up to 5 months for a custom-built replacement transformer to replace a failed unit can be disastrous for a facility in the manufacturing or electrical distribution industry. We also talked a bit about how Solomon Corporation has stock in many types of rewound and reconditioned transformers, affording our customers a significant reduction in the time it takes to source a specific type of replacement transformer direct from the manufacturer. Lastly, we talked about how the reconditioned and rewound transformers from Solomon Corporation often come with a product warranty that often exceeds a new manufacturer’s warranty. In Part 2 of this series, we’ll look at some of the other benefits to reconditioned and rewound transformers.

There are many reasons to consider purchasing a reconditioned or rewound transformer from Solomon Corporation. While the term “refurbished” may lead some to believe what they’re buying is second-hand, this could not be less true when it comes to what you’ll get when you work with Solomon Corporation. In a typical transformer reconditioning job, Solomon Corporation will replace the fluid and re-gasket the entire unit. All components such as switches, bushings, fuses, etc., are checked and replaced as necessary. We give every transformer a full battery of tests to ensure its electrical integrity and to guarantee years of continuous service. Each unit is then cleaned, primed and painted. Solomon Corporation can deliver the unit and when required, in the case of a power transformer, install radiators, bushings, vacuum fill and perform onsite acceptance testing prior to energizing.

Many industrial plants and utility companies of all sizes come to Solomon Corporation for replacement transformers. Why? Because they like what we do. We’ve been in the business for over forty years. We attribute our success to our quality and ongoing engineering and technical support. We take pride in our work and we guarantee our products and workmanship.

A warranty on a new transformer from the manufacturer is typically for one year. Depending on voltage class and other specifications, a reconditioned or rewound transformer from Solomon Corporation may feature a one, two, or three-year warranty. When it comes to our refurbished transformers, they’re “equal to or better than new.”

The other benefit to replacing a transformer with one that has been rebuilt or rewound is that it allows us to put an existing unit back into service. This practice is not only environmentally sound, it benefits the companies and utilities from which we continue to purchase their out-of-service transformers for our resale inventory.

At the moment, Solomon Corporation has a number of reconditioned or rewound transformers in inventory:

  • Single-phase pole mounts from 1 kva and up
  • Substations from 500 to 30,000 kva
  • Padmount transformers up to 5,000 kva
  • Other transformers with voltage classes up to 69,000 volts

We know that speed of replacement is of the utmost importance, so we’ve launched a new Quick-Ship program that allows us to take rebuilt transformers and deliver them to our customers as soon as we can get a truck under them. The Quick-Ship program was devised in Q2 of 2014, is currently in the “stocking process,” but should be ready for Solomon Corporation customers to utilize later this year.

This Quick-Ship program isn’t a new set of ideas or service offerings. It’s just a strategy geared toward better serving the industrial side of our business-something we believe will help us offer better (and faster) service to our customers.
